I’ve heard SLS and SCS (sodium coco sulphate) are basically the same?

The Soil Association recognises SCS (sodium coco sulphate) as a safer alternative to SLS (Sodium lauryl sulphate), but to expand a little on the differences between the two. Both of these ingredients are made in the same way, by treating fatty acids with sulphuric acid and then neutralising with an alkali. However the difference lies in the origins of the ingredients. SLS is made using purified and isolated Lauric Acid, whereas SCS is made from coconut oil. This difference in starting materials has an impact on the end product, SLS as a smaller and relatively simple molecular mass than SCS, so SLS can thus penetrate the epidermis of the skin more easily where as SCS, due to its larger and more complex molecular mass cannot do so. These differences are recognised by international authorities and have two different CAS numbers (chemical abstracts service which identifies all chemical compounds in an internationally approved database) – SLS CAS number – 151 – 21 – 3. SCS CAS number – 97375 – 27 – 4.

Why do some products show a warning sign?

All of our products have been formulated to be as safe and natural as possible, we use plant-based ingredients and steer away from harsh chemicals. However, there is strict labelling regulation for products that contain natural oils. (EC) No.1272/2008 (CLP) and Detergent Regulation (EC) No. 648/2004.

What are the benefits of plant-based ingredients?

By using organic ingredients you’re not only getting a superior product free from harsh chemicals, but you’re also helping our planet! Organic ingredients are grown with as little chemicals like pesticides as possible, and even then these are as gentle as they can be. This helps the soil and all the creates and biodiversity found within it to stay healthy! The ingredients are traceable and from responsible sources. There are a myriad more reasons for using organic ingredients and I think the best place to start is with the Soil Association website.
